Ahmedabad, Gujarat Indian Fusion Wedding by Destination Photographers

Hello, Maharanis! This lovely journey to India is getting closer to the end with Steffi & Zeel's wedding reception party. And get yourself ready because this is reception is one for the books! In between fireworks and upbeat music played by Vishal Soni, our lovely couple burst into the room looking elegantly and fashionably. Steffi rocked an embroidered champagne outfit from Jade by Monica & Karishma, complemented by Ulupi Parikh - Ulupi’s Salon & Spa, who took care of her beauty needs. And we want to make a big shoutout to Vrinda Saraf for styling every outfit of this Maharani during the entire wedding festivities. Zeel matched his wife's style dressed in a black tux from Emporio Armani. This whole gala was a cornucopia of elegance and style, designed by Event Tadka and a fantastic decor from Aavkar Decor! How did you meet your Groom and when did you know he was "the one"?
We met at my store, we had a few common friends but we never spoke/met personally. That was the first time we spoke, exchanged numbers and from that day we had that instant comfort and connection. We did not date each other, as we both were looking for a life partner during that time, so we decided to spend some time together and further decide. Once we were sure about our decision, we told our parents about and they agreed to meet. They met and said YES!

How did you meet your Groom and when did you know he was "the one"?
When I moved to New York 4 years ago, I was desperately trying to meet new people. I met Shajib within the first 2 months of moving. He was someone who made dating seem so easy. His carefree and laid-back attitude gave me a glimpse of the possible future, that we could be happy even if we were just chilling on the couch watching reruns. That's when I knew, the moment of just hanging out and doing something extremely routine, but feeling so happy to be with each other.

Share the scoop on your Proposal Story!
We took a day off work to go to a quaint town near NYC. We were planning on doing some hiking, exploring, and just having a fun day. It was a sunny but cold day with temperatures of around 9 degrees. Shajib was guiding me towards a spot that he had looked up online, but we got lost and ended up getting off the trail to find this beautiful lookout point. Once we got there, he walked straight up on top of a picnic table and held out his hand for me to join, he distracted me so I would turn around, and when I looked back at him, he was down on one knee. It had been 2 years since we had been dating, and even though we had discussed getting married, I was not expecting it and I completely started ugly crying. We were lucky enough that another couple were hiking up a few minutes behind us to that spot and took a couple of proposal pictures of us. It was perfect because it was him.

Tell us how you went about planning your wedding, and your overall experience with the Venues, Hair & Makeup, Outfits, Decor Theme, and all of the other important details.
Wedding planning was a little difficult, neither of us had any idea where to begin. We started by deciding where to get married, we knew it wouldn't be in New York City or my hometown in Mississippi. We narrowed down our top choices and finally agreed on New Orleans. We had some difficulty with a couple of vendors, a planner who wouldn't finalize the contract and kept increasing her charges, and a decorator who quit at the last minute. Luckily I was able to find Rena with Alchemy Events, who agreed to be my planner even though I had already finalized some key details. Once she came on board, it seemed like everything started falling into place. It was just nice to talk things out with someone who had wedding knowledge and make the best possible decisions together.

What was the most enjoyable part of the planning process, and why?
The most enjoyable part of the planning process was probably doing the test ride on our horses for the baraat. Meeting the vendors for the first time and sharing our vision with them, having them understand exactly what we needed was also a really exciting experience. It was like we were building our own world, and we could do whatever we wanted, we didn't let anyone force us into following arbitrary rules, and luckily our immediate families were very supportive of our (my) wedding dreams.

Was there a really special moment in your wedding that constantly replays in your mind?
The Baraats, for sure, there was a moment when I got up on my horse with all my guests in front of me, and I just felt so loved. Then, my baraat met Shajibs, I saw how much fun he was having, we caught each other's attention for a moment in the midst of all the celebration, and we both knew that we would always remember this moment.

For events other than your ceremony, please tell us as much as you would like about the decor, style, dances, and all the special details.
It was important to both of us to represent our Hindu/Muslim, Indian/Bangladeshi, NYC/MS customs, and traditions. We made peacock colors our theme, as they also worked with Mardi Gras colors. We worked with our planner to represent everything we possibly could, our sangeet had Mardi Gras masks and beads to represent New Orleans, but we had desi style cushions on the ground for people to sit on. We had brought a lot of maangtikas, chooris, and chunnis from India, for everyone to use and dress themselves up to enjoy the sangeet festivities.

Do you have any words of wisdom for Brides-To-Be?
It's going to be stressful, it's going to be difficult, it may seem impossible at times, but it's so amazing when all your loved ones come together to celebrate your love. You have to disconnect from planning and project management mode the week of your wedding, at that point, stop worrying about the details and just enjoy. Even if something isn't exactly as you planned or seems like it will be a disaster, just let your vendors handle it and spend time with your friends and family to take in all the love.

At the end of it all, the only thing I remember is having fun, smiling and laughing like I conquered the world and crying because of how much this wedding would change our lives. I don't remember any of the details and I don't even care to remember which flower arrangements we went with or if we got the expensive chairs. All I remember were the range of emotions I felt, and how much love I was surrounded with.

We hope you have a great weekend! See you on Monday, ladies!

Ronak and I were headed to the annual South Asian Bar Association Gala. We went to the botanical garden a little bit earlier so we could walk around and enjoy the beauty of the location before the Gala. Ronak and I had been to the botanical garden before and I had fallen in love with the place. It is absolutely beautiful and relaxing there.  We ended up walking halfway through the garden, over the bridge when we noticed this pond. This pond was in the middle of the garden surrounded by land all around. We walked closer to the pond holding hands since the grass was a bit wet. We were walking side by side and then all of a sudden he took the lead and was on his knee. At the time I had no idea what was going on. He started talking and I thought I was listening to the words that were coming out of his mouth but honestly, I can't remember anything, it's all such a blur. I was shocked, trying to understand what was happening. I looked around and noticed that we had just walked through a rose pathway. He asked me to marry him! I was blown away! I started shedding tears of joy, I can't even remember if I actually said the word "Yes."  I handed him my hand and he put this beautiful diamond on my finger. All of a sudden I noticed the photographer, I guess he was hiding behind the bush the whole time! We took a moment to ourselves and took some photos and then I turned around when I heard a loud "Surprise" from behind me. My sisters, friends, and cousins were standing behind me. I had no idea how to react but to cry (I am very emotional, to begin with). We ended up doing an engagement shoot after taking photos with everyone there. We decided to go to dinner at Macianos( the restaurant where it all started), since there was no Gala. It was all a setup, even Ronak's coworkers were in on it! We stopped at a friends house before heading to dinner since there was some time to kill. Ronak stopped the car a block away, got out of the car and put his suit jacket on. I was wondering why he didn't just take it inside the house and put it on inside. It was just our friends' house, I didn't question it though. We walked into the house and WHOA! We were greeted by all our friends and family. It was decorated, tons of food and dessert. I was admiring the decor when all of a sudden I heard another "Surprise" from the left. I turned and was greeted by my family. I started crying again, of course. Ronak had set up a surprise afterparty for our engagement with everyone close to our hearts there. My heart was so full, it was honestly the best day ever. I wish I could relive that day, every day.

Tell us how you went about planning your wedding, and your overall experience with the Venues, Hair & Makeup, Outfits, Decor Theme, and all of the other important details.
Where to begin. I first created a mutual email account for everything wedding related. That was really helpful, especially for organization purposes. Both our families had started venue shopping right after we did the Indian engagement ceremony, about a year before the wedding. The one thing we needed from the venue was to be able to use the entire space for our 800 guest count wedding ceremony. We had then started with big things like photo, video, DJ, and decor. I started sending emails out as soon as we finalized our wedding date and venue.

Google doc was huge! I made a google doc with multiple tabs separating each event: Mehndi, Garba/Sangeet, Vidhi, Wedding, and Reception. From there I listed all the vendors I would need for each event. The one KEY thing about planning an Indian wedding is organization and google doc helped with exactly that. Negotiation was also a big part of the planning process. I would email multiple photographers and videographers and then compare their pricing and what they were offering. I'd try to negotiate them down to what my budget was and once a happy medium was met I'd book them! When planning a wedding for 800 people it's really hard to stick with a budget, but don't forget all the vendors know that you're on a budget and are willing to negotiate as long as it's reasonable.

DJ- That was easy! We had already known we were going to hire DJ Dhiraj from JSM Entertainment based on his performance at two of our friends' weddings. He was actually the first vendor we booked! Once we booked him he sent us a Music Planner that helped us stay organized and we were able to list all the songs for each performance per night. We were also able to list "must play" songs and " do not play" songs.

Photo: We met Shalin at a nearby Starbucks. The first impression was key. We needed a photographer that would be able to handle 800+ Indian people. He was perfect! He knew what he was doing and how to talk to the Indian crowd as well as a great photographer.  I stopped looking for photographers after Ronak and I met him.

Video- Greg from Neuvision was phenomenal. He showed us some same-day edits and highlights videos that he had created. While looking through his work I noticed that he had done my second cousin's wedding(what a small world)! He assured us that he had done Indian weddings before and knew what to expect. He had also worked with our Photographer before so that was that! He was booked!

Decor- We went with Dream Occasions! My sister is actually best friends with their son and so we were leaning more towards them but after the first meeting, we were sold. Shilpa and Min are just so genuine and personable. They make everything look and sound so easy. I had my full trust in them and basically told them what I liked and let them do what they do best! They put together the most breathtaking decor for each of our events including my house events! They made a tent outside of my house look like a banquet hall!

Hair and Makeup. That was hard, I honestly didn't know where to begin. I googled some people but that didn't really help. I needed to make sure that whoever did my makeup not only did a great job on hair and makeup but was also good at draping the headpiece and the dupatta for my hair and off the shoulder. I started asking my married friends and they made it so easy! I booked Nicki Hala from Hala Beauty for my wedding and reception looks. The amount of compliments I got and still get, WOW. I highly recommend her. I booked Marzena for my other events (mehndi, garba, vidhi). I had worked with her before for my engagement makeup and trusted her fully. Both makeup artists were so laid back and willing to work with every situation.

Mehndi: I booked Sheetal from Henna Moments. I found her on Facebook and reached out to her. She was willing to work with me when it came to pricing and she made her own henna paste which I really favored. The Mehndi came out great, she spent her time on it and was so easy to talk to. She fit right in with my family.

How did you select your bridal lengha or wedding dress? Did you have a favorite color in mind?
My family and I went to India for all our wedding shopping. I knew I wanted to wear traditional colors for the wedding ceremony. The first day we landed we went to AsoPalav in Ahmedabad. I walked in and told the salesperson what I was looking for. He brought out an all velvet burgundy and gold outfit. I tried it on and fell in love with it. I told my dad this was it! We didn't end up buying it since it was our first-day shopping and I could potentially like something better elsewhere. Few days went on, tried on various outfits and I found myself comparing each outfit to the first one I tried on. We ended up going to another Aso Palav location, I asked the guy to bring out the one I had tried on at the other location. They said they didn't have it at that location. My mind was set, I knew I wanted the one I had tried on the first day. They were so nice they offered to have their salesperson at the first location bring the dress to the location I was at. I tried the outfit on again and was still in love with the outfit. I ended up buying it! The dupatta was pink and I wanted beige, they gladly offered to have it made it in beige and shipped it to my house in America.

What was the most enjoyable part of the planning process, and why?
Everyone working together! Friends and family from both sides came together and helped us put together our wedding week. I never realized how much work and how many hours had to be put into planning the wedding of our dreams. It is definitely not something Ronak and I could have done ourselves. It takes the help of a crowd, and luckily we had friends and family that were willing to spend their free time helping us!

What did your guests particularly love about your Wedding?
Our guests enjoyed the energy level throughout the wedding week. There was this indescribable excitement factor that carried through throughout all the events. Ronak and I wanted to personalize the wedding as much as we could. We wanted to make sure that it wasn't just another wedding that our guests were attending. For every event, we tried to incorporate something creative that our guests would enjoy.

Wednesday, mehndi night we had a donut wall that one of our friends built for us ( the kids got a great kick out of it!). We also lit paper lanterns and had Wood Fired Pizza make fresh pizzas for the guests. To this day, we get compliments on how creative the idea of bringing pizza to the guests was.

Ronak and I love to eat! Thursday, garba night we tried to incorporate cuisines from around the world for our guests to enjoy as much as we do. We had Mexican, Asian, American, and Indian street food. It was set up in booths carnival style. We also gifted personalized notepads to everyone that performed a choreographed dance! Shivam Thakkars Live band was a hit, they were set up on the stage from beginning to end for our guests to dance the night away!

Friday, vidhi was at my house. We had hired Arpit to play the dhol throughout the day. Our guests especially the middle-aged group loved that we had a dholi. They were able to dance throughout the day and into the night while eating freshly prepared dosas to their liking.

Saturday for the wedding we tried to keep it traditional with a short ceremony and little snack bags full of m&m's and mixed nuts. They were placed on each seat for our guests to snack on throughout the ceremony.

For the reception, there were a few things that our guests still talk about. The life-size standups of Ronak and I that we had placed throughout the venue. Our guests had so much fun trying to recreate the poses and taking photos next to them ( they somehow ended up being lined up onto the stage in the middle of the night!) People still come up to us to tell us about how good the food was. Meadows Club has their own kitchen and they make the food fresh for the guests!. Lastly, lighting and music! Our DJ and light/sound guy from our venue had worked together to transform the venue into a club-style atmosphere. It was absolutely amazing!

Was there a really special moment in your wedding that constantly replays in your mind?
My bridesmaids went up to the dance floor to perform their choreographed dance during the reception. I knew they were going to do a dance but I didn't know the details. The music started and I started crying. It was a song from my favorite movie, Kuch Kuch Hota Hain. It was so thoughtful!

Another moment was when Ronak's guy friends were doing their dance during the reception. All of a sudden Ronak got up and joined them. He looked at me, we made eye contact and then threw something to me. It was a plastic diamond ring! I have no idea what was going on in my head but I definitely did not catch the ring, oops.

Do you have any words of wisdom for Brides-To-Be?
Stress all you want about every little detail until about a week before the wedding. Take a break, chill and enjoy the wedding week. There is nothing you can do at that point so why worry so much about it. It'll all come together and if something goes wrong it's okay. At the end of the day, just remember you are the only one that will know that something went wrong, you're guests won't even notice.

See you tomorrow for another lovely and inspiring story! Until then, have a great one!

Fort Worth, TX Indian Fusion Wedding by Bella Lumi

Hello, darlings! We are back at the Bass Performance Hall to join Akshada & Alex at their wedding reception party. When we thought that the decor used for the wedding ceremony could not be surpassed, Prashe proof us wrong, creating a new and fantastic decor for this gala. The dim lights, the multicolored floral arrangements, and the ideal placement of all the ornaments created a perfect scenario for Akshada & Alex to have their first dance as husband and wife. DJ Riz Entertainment set the mood for this highly anticipated moment with beautiful melodies and a fantastic scheme of lights that everyone loved. All the guests had a great time dancing and tasting the wide variety of available plates. And we haven't mentioned it, but this gala had up to five different catering services to ensure that all the guests had their favorite food served. So a big shoutout to May I Serve U, Sichuan Folk, Urban Tadka, Chuy's, and ShareTea for the delicious plates they served. And talking about delicious, have we mentioned the beautiful cake that Loft 22 Cakes prepared for this reception party? It looks so good that we wish we had the chance to have a bite because our mouth is melting by just looking at it. If you want to relive the beauty of this event, head to the gallery that we have prepared with the fantastic shots taken by Bella Lumi, you are up for a visual treat. So go check it out!

How did you meet your Groom and when did you know he was "the one"?
We met in high school chemistry, ironically. We became friends first (with a lot of effort on my side) and started dating 2 years later. We went to separate colleges after high school and we would visit each other on weekends whenever we had the time. One of the weekends he was visiting I got really sick and he spent the weekend taking care of me; making his favorite noodles, getting me Gatorade and blueberries, whatever I could stomach. That's when I knew.

Share the scoop on your Proposal Story!
We went on a Labor Day weekend trip to Door County, Wisconsin. We had been discussing engagement for a couple of months but a proposal never came, so I thought it might happen that weekend but he still managed to surprise me. We did romantic things like parasailing and hiking but nothing happened so I just figured this wasn't the time. He waited until the last day of our trip while we were on a bike ride. We stopped on a secluded beach to watch the sunset and drink wine, then he proposed and I was totally caught off guard. It was a rocky beach, so I remember being concerned about his knee while he was kneeling. A random woman hiking by yelled, "Congratulations!" to us but we barely even noticed.

Tell us how you went about planning your wedding, and your overall experience with the Venues, Hair & Makeup, Outfits, Decor Theme, and all of the other important details.
We first found a venue that fit our priorities – guest count and outside catering policy – and took the first available date since that didn’t matter as much to us. Our venue had many diverse beautiful spaces with existing features so we just wanted to accentuate and didn’t force a single theme on it. We also tried to unify our Indian and Chinese cultures in a modern way when deciding on the decor. Our parents and family members were a huge help in doing the legwork for us on many of our vendors since we lived across the country in Madison, WI but got married in Fort Worth, TX.

How did you select your bridal lengha or wedding dress? Did you have a favorite color in mind?
I knew I wanted to wear a lengha but didn't have anything in particular in mind from the beginning. I figured I would be able to shop around and try out different styles until I found the right one. We weren't able to make it to India to go shopping so we knew we had to start looking early at local places, and I was skeptical I wouldn't find anything I liked. I showed a family friend my Pinterest board and she knew exactly where to take us. Walking into Studio D was like walking straight into my personal Pinterest page. I had always loved intricate embroidery and beadwork and all of Divya's collection definitely fit the bill. I struggled with saying yes to the dress because it was one of the first dresses I tried on, but after I went to a few other places and I knew it was the right one for me. When we went back, I tried it on again and my mom and sister agreed this was the one.

What was the most enjoyable part of the planning process, and why?
We really enjoyed trying to maximize the experience for our guests. We knew from the beginning that our top priority was to have an open bar, delicious food, and fun music. If that meant sacrificing on the budget elsewhere or not having the most dignified meals, then so be it. Since it was a fusion wedding, we also knew that there would be a lot of opportunities to introduce new things to both families, from carefully planning the menu options to incorporating family members into the events.

What did your guests particularly love about your Wedding?
From what we heard, people really enjoyed the food. We tried hard to cater from a wide range of restaurants, so we had tex-mex for lunch after the wedding, and both Indian and Chinese options during Garba and the reception. Everyone got to try some of our favorite things and branch out from the typical wedding fare.
Was there a really special moment in your wedding that constantly replays in your mind?
There wasn't one particular moment that replays in my mind, more flashes of dancing at the reception. I have thought back on that night frequently since the wedding and just remember the sheer amount of joy I was feeling. There we were surrounded by our closest family and friends ... dancing to Gold Digger by Kanye. If I could relive any part of my wedding it would easily be the reception.

For events other than your ceremony, please tell us as much as you would like about the decor, style, dances, and all the special details.
While we were doing an overall Indian wedding, we still wanted to incorporate Chinese culture so it wouldn't be so one-sided. My bridal mehndi had his Chinese name hidden within the design, and he also got some mehndi done on his forearm with my name written in Gujarati. However, something got lost in translation and now all of our mehndi pictures have both of us proudly showing off his name!

Garba was always going to be a very Indian event so we organized people to teach the newcomers so that everyone could learn some basic steps and join in instead of sitting off to the side. We also served bubble tea with dinner since it was both a nod to his heritage and we knew it would be a hit with everyone.

Since we decided on doing a Hindu ceremony, we found a priest that was very good at explaining what was going on and also printed out a program. We hung a large Chinese good luck symbol on our mandap opposite from the Ganesh symbol, and also brought up some of his family members to participate in the ceremony. We decided to change up the lunch fare by offering tex-mex from Chuy's instead of serving a traditional Indian lunch so that we could share some of our favorite cuisine with everyone.

The reception was the only place that wasn't inherently Indian, so we tried to really embrace more Asian elements without being gaudy. We strung red lanterns across the open ceiling and had strands of hand-folded origami paper cranes incorporated everywhere - while not technically Chinese, it was meaningful to us because he asked me to prom with an origami sign way back when.

Do you have any words of wisdom for Brides-To-Be?
Settle on a budget and decide what you’re not willing to sacrifice on, that will make it easier to make tough decisions later. Everyone has an opinion on what they want to see. Make sure you have your priorities straight so that you can let go of the smaller details – it’s easier to avoid arguments that way. Don't be afraid to accept help, there are too many things to do and you can’t possibly micromanage every aspect. A day-of coordinator is a really nice thing to have, as your schedule will already be packed without much sleep, much less time to manage everything else.

We are so inspired right now that we need to take a moment to let it sink! But we will be back tomorrow with a new lovely story, so make sure to join us!
