How did you meet your Groom and when did you know he was "the one"?
We met on Tinder! It was very spontaneous and neither of us were looking for a serious relationship so we took it very slow and it was months before we chose to be in a committed relationship. We were in very different places in our lives and still trying to figure ourselves out first so we put very little pressure on each for the long term and just took our relationship day by day. I knew he was the one when I moved away to NYC (we had lived a couple miles apart until then) and within the first week away from him I knew I couldn't live without him! In retrospect that was also the week he realized I was "the one" and started looking into buying a ring!

Share the scoop on your Proposal Story!
Mike proposed at the coffee shop we had our first date at. He coordinated the whole thing with the store manager and my best friend. He had my best friend lure me there and when I ordered my coffee they sent out a pink rose latte to my table with a heart in the foam and "Will you marry me" on the saucer. When I turned around the whole shop was full of balloons and rose petals and Mike was there on one knee!

Tell us how you went about planning your wedding, and your overall experience with the Venues, Hair & Makeup, Outfits, Decor Theme, and all of the other important details.
Our wedding could not have come together without the help of both our families. The biggest factor for us when working with venders was working with people who were familiar with fusion weddings and able to incorporate both cultures and styles, especially our venue.
Our venue was Rasoi 3 in Monmouth Junction, NJ.
Photography by Elk & Elm Studios.
Flowers by Heena's Flower Garden

Hair and Mendhi was Dulhan by Darshita.

All of our venders were amazing. They worked so well with us and many have become friends who we have worked with more than once for various events.

How did you select your bridal lengha or wedding dress? Did you have a favorite color in mind?
Originally I had ordered a bridal lengha online, I didn't want something too traditional, and I wanted it to be something I could dance and move around in. I didn't want to be weighed down by my outfit. When my dress online came in it was a few inches too short and the color didn't match my fiancé's sherwani, so we had less than 2 weeks to find a whole new outfit that could match the jewelry and bridal parties outfits. We had opted for very summery and light colors in the pastel family, mainly peaches, pinks, and baby blues. I ultimately ended up buying fabric at Manyavar in Edison, NJ a week before the wedding, the tailor measured me and built the dress in 3 days and it was PERFECT. It was a cream colored with lots of bright pink embroidery and a pink net dupatta.

What was the most enjoyable part of the planning process, and why?
The best part was seeing our families come together and seeing how much everyone cared about making sure our day was perfect and stress free. Bringing home someone who wasn't South Asian wasn't easy and we worked so hard to make it to our wedding day, and seeing everyone on both sides of our family so invested in our happiness really left us in awe.

What did your guests particularly love about your Wedding?
Having a fusion wedding meant trying to accommodate two different cultures so we did that in various ways in order to make all of our guests feel comfortable. I think Michael's family had fun being a part of something so different then what they are used to in terms of a wedding, it was a totally different culture but we made sure they all felt included and a part of our big day. We created wedding programs that listed all the steps and details of a Hindu ceremony. During lunch and dinner we also made a point of serving both Italian food as well as Indian food. And our ceremony was conducted in English. It was the small ways we integrated both cultures that made our guests feel welcome.

Was there a really special moment in your wedding that constantly replays in your mind?
We really loved the baraat, since we made every guest participate, not just the grooms side. We opted out of having a white horse but instead took all the doors off of a white Jeep Wranglers and covered the frame in flowers. It allowed Mike to have something to dance on top of instead of just awkwardly sitting on. Me and my bridesmaids made a point of crashing the baraat with our sunglasses on and really getting the party started. Our family really loved it and had so much fun.

For events other than your ceremony, please tell us as much as you would like about the decor, style, dances, and all the special details.
We had a mendhi night and santuk the days leading up to the wedding. We combined all 3 days of our wedding with both sides of our family, traditionally the bride and grooms sides don't come together until the day of the wedding ceremony itself, but we opted to combine everything since Mike's family is not Indian. We also included full bridal parties with a maid of honor and best man, etc.

Do you have any words of wisdom for Brides-To-Be?
2 things:
1. When decisions and planning get overwhelming, try to ask yourself  "will this matter in 10 years?". It's a quick way to gain perspective in the moment.
and 2. (this is for wedding planning and beyond) It's never you vs. your partner, it's ALWAYS you and your partner vs. the problem.

Anything else you want to tell us? We'd love to hear all about your other details! (jewelry, mehndi, venue, cake, bouquets, etc.)
For more info on our story and our entire wedding planning process, check out our podcast about South Asian dating and interracial/interfaith relationships called "But What Will People Say?" Episode 1 and 2 breaks down Mike and I's story. Followed by a 4 part fusion wedding planning series!

We still have tears of happiness running down our faces, so we will just take a moment to clean them out and be right back with more amazingness for you to enjoy! So stick around!

Ojai, CA Indian Fusion Wedding by Matt and Jess

Welcome back, darlings! We have arrived at the third and final part of Julia & Anuj's wedding celebration. This time, we are ready to have some fun at the reception party these lovebirds threw at The Ranch House, to celebrate their life milestone. In between a mix of rustic and traditional flair, this reception party was off the charts, and we want to make a big shoutout to Forage Ojai for the on-point decor they put together for this closing gala as it was utter perfection! The entire night was a huge success, but one of the most anticipated moments happened when our lovebirds had the first cut at the sweet delicious caked baked by Sugar Lab Bake Shop. The dim lights, the greenery surrounding the scene, and all the emotions, resulted in a magical moment, so beautiful that we were left out of words to describe it! Thankfully, Matt and Jess were there to capture all the magical moments of this reception party, and they were kind enough to share their talented work with us! If you want to take a peek at the incredible shots of this reception party, or if you want to relive the entire wedding festivities, don't miss the gallery that we have prepared for today! It is an absolute visual delight overflowing with beauty and inspiring ideas you don't want to miss! Go check it out!

How did you meet your Groom and when did you know he was "the one"?
We met online on a website called Meet Mindful.  Both of us had never signed up for websites like this, but decided to take the plunge. Anuj has just moved to San Francisco a week before we met.  He asked me to meet him at pier 39, which is an incredibly crowded tourist spot.  I thought it would be hard to spot him, but then from the corner of my eye I saw an awkward and timid tall guy gazing at me.  But from the moment we said hi, we couldn’t stop taking all night, which was new for both of us.

Share the scoop on your Proposal Story!
I never expected the proposal when it happened.  We had been dating for over 2 years, and it had been hard to navigate the idea of marriage because of the cultural differences and his family obligations.  Anuj’s family was not on board until he decided to tell them he was planning to propose to me.  He even secretly asked my parents at the dinner table in front of me without my knowing, texting them under the table.  They became tearful and made up an excuse to leave because they were so happy.  I had no idea.  Later, Anuj took me to my favorite spa in Calistoga, for facials.  We lounged in the Buddha pond garden when he began talking to me about wine country weddings. I still didn’t get the hint.  I looked up at the sky and then back at him, when he was on his knee with a ring asking me to marry him. All that we had fought for and worked for together felt like a magical dream when he made this decision to marry me.

Tell us how you went about planning your wedding, and your overall experience with the Venues, Hair & Makeup, Outfits, Decor Theme, and all of the other important details.
The first thing we had to figure out was the date, which in Hindi weddings was quite a task.  My mother in law had to speak with an Indian priest to settle dates according to astrology.  When we finally figured that out, I moved on to pick a venue, which was also a little stressful to find the right place.  Somehow it just landed in our laps.  From there I picked my dress, which I had limited options for Indian boutique wedding shops, but found a great one where I found my glorious golden lehenga.  Everything else just happened with ease.

How did you select your bridal lengha or wedding dress? Did you have a favorite color in mind?
I wanted a nice quality lehenga, so I had to search for Indian boutique wedding shops in California.  I found one in Pleasanton, which had various designer dresses.  It was magnificent to look through all of the colorful and extravagant gowns.  I thought it would be hard to pick one, and it was hard to choose ones I really loved.  But when I tried them on it just suddenly clicked when the perfect one came along.

What was the most enjoyable part of the planning process, and why?
Well picking out the dress and the bridesmaid saris was so much fun! But also visiting the venue in Ojai was a blast.  Visualizing the space and the decorations got me so excited.  Cake and menu testing was also the yummiest part.

What did your guests particularly love about your Wedding?
I think that everyone really enjoyed the dancing.  It was present when Anuj made his baraat entrance, and again after the ceremony.  It’s hard to not have fun when Bollywood beats and high energies are blasting through the night.

Was there a really special moment in your wedding that constantly replays in your mind?
When I was hiding in the tea house at the wedding venue, I could hear the baraat music and drums happening outside.  I realized in that moment that I was about to embark upon marrying my lovebird, my janu.  My heart pounded faster, and I couldn’t stop smiling, with subtle tears behind my eyes.  My music came on (Latina’s theme from the movie slumdog millionaire).  My eyes watered and my face smiled as I looked at Anuj watching me walk toward him.  Everything felt perfect and right and I couldn’t think of a more magical and special moment.

There was a moment during our wedding planning where both our mothers were trying to figure out logistics pertaining to both cultures.  It wasn’t an ugly situation but it stressed both Anuj and I put.  Then I had a moment when I realized, I really don’t care when the family photos are taken, I just wanted to marry my man.  That moment was subtle but so special.

For events other than your ceremony, please tell us as much as you would like about the decor, style, dances, and all the special details.
The decor was mostly just the gardens of the Ojai Ramch House.  But we embellished it with some Indian touches and masterful flower arrangements from the florist.  We wanted the decor to embody the fusion between India and California, and it was just perfect. The ceremony was still in daylight, but the reception led into the night, celebrating the twinkling lights and warmth of the cozy venue.

Do you have any words of wisdom for Brides-To-Be?
Enjoy the process.  The wedding is a magical moment, and the planning can be so much fun.  It passes in no time.  Savor it.

We hope you've had a blast! See you tomorrow for a new inspiring story, until then, have a great one!

Enjoy the process.  The wedding is a magical moment, and the planning can be so much fun.  It passes in no time.  Savor it.

We hope you are enjoying this wedding celebration as much as we are! If that is the case, don't miss the upcoming reception party! You will love it!
