How did you meet your Groom and when did you know he was "the one"?
We initially got in touch after being matched on Hinge. After a month or so of texting, we had our first date at Gottino, a bar in the West Village in New York. Our relationship took off pretty quickly from there. About four months into us dating, Vinit was looking to move to a new apartment. He was looking at all the buildings in my area, except for my building. I suggested he look in my building and he found a great apartment. He took the apartment and moved in a month later. That was the start of knowing he was the one! I really knew, though, after he spent a weekend in Fire Island with ~15 of my college friends. Two guys got into a food fight and an entire birthday cake ended up on Vinit’s lap. His clothes were ruined. But he just laughed it off, changed, and continued having a great time. Seeing how easily he mixed with all my friends, while still looking out for me, and how much more I enjoyed any experience when he was around made me realize he was the one. Six months into us dating we took a trip to Italy together. It was there that we first talked about how we thought we would get married and knew we both had found the one.

Share the scoop on your Proposal Story!
We got engaged on June 10th, 2016. About a month before this, Vinit’s sister-in-law emailed both of us saying they had won tickets in an auction to the Broadway show “The Color Purple” for June 10th and wanted to see if we wanted to go with them. We of course agreed, and I didn’t think twice about it! A couple days before, Vinit’s brother suggested we go to dinner beforehand and told us a time and restaurant to meet at. Since Vinit and I lived in the same building, on the day of, he told me to just come over to his place and we’d head out together. As I opened his door I just saw candles and rose petals everywhere. He lined the path from the doorway to the center of the living room with candles, flowers, and rose petals, and he stood waiting in a suit. He said many nice things (which I had to be retold later) and then got down on one knee. After the proposal, I turned around to see that on his dining table he had printed tons of pictures of us and also had mementos from our dates – like the scorecard from going mini-golfing on our third date, and the card of the restaurant we went to in Jacksonville on our first Valentine’s day. He had also made a beautiful playlist of all my favorite romantic songs. After we spent some time together, I asked if I could call my parents. He said, why don’t we go tell your sister first (whom I lived with just upstairs). When we went up to the apartment, I was surprised by my parents, his parents, my sister, and his brother and his family. We popped champagne and spent time together before going to an amazing dinner at ABC Kitchen that Vinit had organized. Then we got to spend the rest of the weekend as a soon to be family!

Tell us how you went about planning your wedding, and your overall experience with the Venues, Hair & Makeup, Outfits, Decor Theme, and all of the other important details.
Wedding planning was not easy as I lived in California, Vinit was in New York, and the wedding was going to be in Florida. However, we had tremendous help from our parents and siblings to make it all happen. The Omni Amelia Island Plantation, where we held the wedding, was phenomenal in adapting to the needs of an Indian wedding. We had great experiences with many vendors, including Sona Photography, Riant Films, Beyond a Salon, DJ Shilpa, Signature Weddings & Events (Cyndi Benzel), and many more. We were fortunate that because I had grown up in a vibrant Indian community in Jacksonville, we had recommendations from numerous family friends and had experience working with many of the vendors in the past.

How did you select your bridal lengha or wedding dress? Did you have a favorite color in mind?
Our families went shopping in Mumbai to pick out wedding clothes. I had been following all the major designers on Instagram for a long time by this point so had an idea of the styles. I knew for the wedding itself I would have a red lengha or red and white. We found a phenomenal selection at Friendship in Mumbai as well as at Seasons and all the clothes for myself, my sister, and my mom were bought from these stores.

What was the most enjoyable part of the planning process, and why?
Spreadsheets! But really. I love organizing and making to-do lists, almost to a fault. And I love making Excel spreadsheets! I genuinely enjoy executing on tasks and thinking of next steps, so enjoyed, or rather felt competent at, that aspect of the planning process.

What did your guests particularly love about your Wedding?
The food and the music! The food was incredibly good, with so much variety and quantity. Rajbhog did a phenomenal job. DJ Shilpa kept the party going all day and all night. She, her team, and the dhol player made the Baraat one of the liveliest that people have ever been to and made sure the garba and the reception had everyone on the dance floor. We also received many compliments on how all of the events started on time…perhaps a pleasant surprise for an Indian wedding! Finally, we got a lot of compliments on our ceremony and how we had adapted the traditional Hindu / Jain ceremony to be our own.

Was there a really special moment in your wedding that constantly replays in your mind?
Honestly, everything about it was perfect. Two moments do come to mind though. One is being on the mandap. Vinit and I would chat up there, making each other laugh here and there. It really felt like we were just hanging out. But then we would look out at the audience and see all the people we love and care about, through so many walks of life, smiling back at us. To have everyone that is important to you in one place at one time is so special. I felt similarly when we were on the dance floor at the reception. Just looking around the dance circles and seeing everyone having a blast, and being there for you, is overwhelming in the most positive way.

For events other than your ceremony, please tell us as much as you would like about the decor, style, dances, and all the special details.
Though I knew this, I was reminded a million times over, how strong the Indian community in Jacksonville is and how lucky I am to have grown up there. Our family’s closest friends were constantly helping with all the details. I spent the two weeks before the wedding at home and was amazed by the number of people always showing up to help. The uncles and aunties transformed our house, decorating it with colorful saris and lights throughout our home, and helping to organize and decorate a tent in our backyard. They were always the first to show up and the last to leave. Some of the aunties even prepared special songs to sing at the mehndi and pithi. The biggest surprise of all was that seven couples and my parents performed a dance at the Garba. My parents rarely dance, but it was their idea, and the family friends agreed without hesitation. It was incredibly special. It was also so special to have our friends dance at both the Garba and the reception. My bridesmaids from Jacksonville performed a dance at the Garba, which I joined as a surprise. Then our friends from childhood, college, grad school, and NY performed a dance at the reception. They started off re-creating dances I had choreographed for other friends’ weddings which were so creative, thoughtful, and fun, and ended with a dance of their own.

One of the most fun parts for Vinit and I, even before the actual day, was learning our first dance. My family had gifted us dance lessons in which a very strict teacher got us prepped for our debut performance. We had a great time learning and practicing and then finally getting to perform it.

My dad and I surprised the crowd during our Father / Daughter dance by transitioning from a slow song into a Bollywood dance. It was actually his idea to do this, and we had a great time with it!

Our ceremony was also really special as we made many parts our own. Our priest is someone very special to me as I’ve grown up with him as the leader of our mandhir. He worked with us to make sure it was exactly what we wanted, and did a tremendous job translating each and every detail in English so that the entire audience could understand what was happening throughout the ceremony. We made the decision to remove the Kanyadaan as I felt it did not align with the values we hold for a women’s role in marriage and life. We replaced it with a step we created in which both of our families came to the mandap and we expressed our promises and commitments to them as our families came together. It was very special for us to do this and something that our guests very much enjoyed as well. We got a lot of positive feedback that there are rituals that can be seen as outdated, and it was great to see how we can evolve our customs to better represent how we think and live today.

Vinit and I aren’t the most creative people so our décor was mainly a mix of things we had seen in pictures and inspiration from our decorators. Our decorators did a fantastic job of a quick switch to an indoor ceremony when it turned out to be too windy to host it on the beach.

Do you have any words of wisdom for Brides-To-Be?
It strikes me as odd that almost every Indian couple I have ever talked to has said that the wedding planning process is brutal. And ours was no walk in the park either. But it makes me wonder, does it really have to be that way? For many of us, whose parents were born and raised in India, there is a large cultural difference that really comes out during wedding planning. For our parents, their parents planned their weddings and in large part, they obliged to their parent's wishes. Knowing that it should come as no surprise, that subconsciously or consciously they hope for the same. It is often their dream to plan their kid’s wedding, and they dream about that day often as much as we, the kids, do. But here in America, we are raised in a culture where the bride and groom, and particularly the bride, do all the planning. So how do you reconcile this without someone feeling they are getting the short end of the stick? There’s often no easy answer. In retrospect, though, I think it’s extremely important to have an expectation setting conversation before even starting to plan. This includes talking through the norms of how our decisions will be made – who has decision making authority vs. who is just there for input? Agree to this in advance. It’s also critical to know what are the most important things to each person. Let each person (parent/sibling) identify the 2-3 things that are most important to them about the wedding, and try to fulfill that for them. And to the parents, also recognizing that your child has a dream for their own wedding with potentially differing priorities and how to balance that with your own is important. There is a great article from a mom’s perspective that speaks to this - https://www.indiaabroad.com/opinion/a-dream-indian-wedding-but-whose-dream/article_9d50ddf6-78a4-11e7-8e4f-a76a769f9ba2.html

And finally, most importantly, keep open communication with your partner. Keep in mind that what you are doing is just planning an event, but you have the rest of your life ahead. Don’t let the magic of your relationship die with the stress of planning.

Anything else you want to tell us? We'd love to hear all about your other details! (jewelry, mehndi, venue, cake, bouquets, etc.)
Publix makes the most incredible wedding cakes. We have gotten so many compliments on the cake and people cannot believe it is from a grocery store (even if it is the best grocery store!).

The Omni in Amelia Island is a fantastic venue to consider for anyone in Florida or anyone looking for a destination wedding. The property is absolutely beautiful with an array of activities for your guests. While still new to Indian weddings, the sales manager and events coordinator worked extremely hard to accommodate our requests and help ensure we had an amazing wedding weekend.

Sushila from Sushila’s Beauty Care in Jacksonville provides fantastic mehndi along with several other services like hair, makeup, sari dressing, etc.

Welcome Party / Game Night:

Our wedding weekend kicked off with an informal “bienvenidos fiesta” or welcome party. This event took place on a terrace garden surrounded by a beautiful coy fish pond. Since most of our guests had just arrived that day, we wanted to give everyone a chance to meet and greet. That evening, we handed out personalized welcome bags. It consisted of a welcome packet - a thank you message, itinerary for the weekend, map of the resort highlighted with where the events are going to take place, and helpful spanish phrases. It also had a few essential items, a handy hangover kit, and customized ladkewale/ladkiwale tshirts. We asked all our guests to wear these t-shirts to the game night which took place later that night to represent their respective side. This was the perfect icebreaker between both sides as everyone got super competitive and super comfortable with each other. Obviously, the ladkiwale team won by a landslide.

Haldi / Pool Party:

The haldi was a cute little informal ceremony held on the infinity deck with a breathtaking view of the beach. We asked our guests to be dressed in yellow which made for incredibly vibrant pictures. After the haldi, all the aunties and uncles stripped down to their bathing suits and jumped in the pool and we all spent the afternoon getting wild at the pool party.

Sangeet:

The sangeet was held poolside and was Bollywood themed. It had a laid back set up with white lounge furniture but very pop-art, colorful, and kitsch décor. We included the poolside cabanas as part of the seating arrangement so our guests could laze whilst watching the performances. The décor included vibrant pillows, kites, pinwheels, Chinese lanterns, neon parrots that Rikin and I spent countless hours cutting and gluing together (he still hates me for that). We lit up the surrounding palm trees with bright and multicolored up-lights and fairy lights. The highlight was the Bollywood photobooth backdrop that we created ourselves. Our guests really enjoyed posing in front of the unique backdrop with fun props that included lots of Bollywood dialogues. On one of our first dates, we watched the Bollywood movie Andaaz Apna Apna and since then it’s been a staple in our relationship. We pretty much watch the movie every month and frequently talk to each other in dialogues from the movie. Because of our obsession with the movie, we knew it had to be a part of our wedding. We created props with dialogues from the movie and used them as fun centerpieces and photobooth props as well. “Gogo ji, aapka ghagra” was my favorite! The evening comprised of jaw-dropping surprise performances by our guests. More than half of the guests that attended, put up a choreographed performance. Instead of doing speeches, our friends and cousins gave a “roast” of the bride and groom, sharing hilarious mishaps and jokes about us. My sister and bridesmaids put together an amazing skit about the couple that was made solely from Bollywood dialogues that had all the guests in splits. The performances were followed by countless tequila shots and an open dance floor. Our playlist that night was all bollywood with mostly our favorite 90s dhinchak music.

Wedding:

As the 1.2km of Cancun’s ocean and white sand beach have a magnificent beauty of its own, it was important for us to keep the wedding décor simple yet elegant. Our color theme was pink, peach and red with white flowers which looked striking against the turquoise water in the background. We knew it was going to be a hot day so we had to think of creative ways to keep our guests cool. We gave everyone bright parasol umbrellas that matched our color scheme. In addition to providing kulfis, ice slushies, and coconut water, we also gave personal fans that attached to your phone - these were quite a hit.

The groom entered in style on a jet ski and then danced down the beach with his baraat. The bridesmaids and groomsmen entered the mandap to a choreographed performance of “abhi toh party shuru hui hai”. We had a hindu wedding ceremony which was perfectly condensed to under an hour.

Reception:

Our reception was on the beach as well. There was a storm coming that night so the calm before the storm brought by an incredible breeze and you could tell the weather gods were smiling down on us. Our decor was an all white dream. Our goal was the create a classy and romantic setting. We choose white tiffany chairs, white chair sashes, white linens, white backdrop, white victorian sweetheart sofa, white bird cages, and white flowers with some peach and blush pink accents. We lit up the place with hundreds of candles and had multiple ornate free standing chandeliers marking the isle and surrounding the periphery of the venue. Our table placement cards were very unique. The evening started on a fun note as we put all our guests pictures with their table numbers in a tequila shot so they had to ‘take a shot, and take a seat’.

Words from the Bride:

Right after Rikin and I danced down the aisle as we entered the reception, my dad came up to us, gave us a hug and said “Look at what you have created, it’s incredible”. I couldn’t help hold back my tears. Seeing how beautiful the reception looked and how our years worth of hard work had culminated to this one, perfect night, was the highlight of the whole weekend.

Our first dance was choreographed by one of our best friends. It was quite a production as she had the task to teach us how to dance with our two left feet! We started with a waltz to “Aaj jaane ki zid na karo” which is easily my all time favorite song and paired it perfectly with fireworks. It went on to “Rukmini Rukmini” at the groom’s insistence which was rather scandalous but hilarious. We ended it with the Friends theme song “I’ll be there for you”, which is a daily staple in our life. This was followed by very emotional speeches by our parents, sisters and best friends that brought both of us to tears. After that each and every one of our guest got up and performed in a surprise flash mob to “Tujhko banakar ke le jayenge, badri ki dulhaniya” which was so amazing! Right towards the end of the night, we had a few minutes of rain which was such a blessing. The music stopped for a few minutes and all the guests embraced the drizzle and continued to sing in tandem and danced along till the music restarted. After the reception was over, everyone migrated to the nightclub in the resort and continued the party till five in the morning. After a while the night club DJ and the local crowd embraced our craziness and started playing Bollywood music. It was simply incredible - from what the two sober people remember since everyone else was entirely wasted.

Have a wonderful Thursday Maharanis!
