How did you meet your Groom and when did you know he was "the one"?
Anil and I went to high school together. We've known each other as acquaintances for many years. However, he was just the boy across the lunch room that I thought was cute. Eventually, we both parted ways after high school and were re introduced by our two best friends that were dating. Our friends, Dolly and Jiffin set us up one night as we were both out for drinks. We exchanged numbers, and it went from there. I knew Anil was the one when we planned our first out of state trip to D.C. and we planned a bike ride to all the monuments. I told him I don't know how to ride a bike (which, I still don't), and he brought a bike to my house to teach me. While he was teaching me, I was freaking out with this fear I'm going to fall and probably break a few bones. But, he looked at me and told me "I have you, you won't fall trust me." And in that moment, I knew he was the one I could trust. Something in his voice that day told me, this man will always have my back.
Share the scoop on your Proposal Story!
My cousins planned a trip on labour day weekend to rent a house out in Austin, Texas. My family had met Anil at this point, and told me to bring him so they can get to know him better. Of course, I had no idea Anil had set this entire trip himself. The night of arrival all my cousins were hanging out in this Airbnb when my brother in law tripped on the stairs and shattered his ankle our first night. Anil had plans to propose the next day and I'm sure he was panicking at this point. After spending the entire night in the Emergency Room we headed home the next morning. We had plans for a boating trip the next afternoon that I was not up for. All my cousins we're adamant we still go and I thought they were insane. So we headed onto this boat, with my brother in law who is in crutches by the way. As we're on this boat we pull into this area on the lake that is secluded and I see another boat of people holding up posters. I look at them and think to myself, "who gets on a boat and parties with poster signs?" Pulling up closer to these lunatics, I realize those lunatics are my best friends holding signs that have a list of all our "firsts" together. The last poster, stated "September 5th, when you said Yes." I saw the poster and began to cry. Anil called my name, and he was on one knee. My cousins were in the back holding another sign asking me to marry him. I still cannot believe Anil had my closest friends and family in that moment with me on the water. It was literally the sweetest and most thoughtful proposal ever. I do think I would of caught onto all of these hints if my brother in law had not landed up in the ER that night. But, I think that made this weekend even better!
Tell us how you went about planning your wedding, and your overall experience with the Venues, Hair & Makeup, Outfits, Decor Theme, and all of the other important details.
I was a full time student when I planned my wedding, trying to finished my MSN degree. However, I did not want to use a wedding planner. I wanted to hand select everything for our wedding. I am big on colors, details, and specifics. When choosing my outfit I wanted it to be different from outfits I have seen in the past. I did not want to chose the typical colors or designs. I hand designed my entire outfit with the help of Panache by Sharmeen and inspiration from Manish Malhotra. Our wedding did not include a reception, and we had one major event which was our Sangeet. I wanted to make sure our Sangeet had vibes of a party theme and a reception all at once. This image was hard to make come alive. I proposed the two ideas to Arshad with Blink Decor and we sat in multiple meetings to make this idea come to life. I wanted a flower bed above our dance floor that was full, and a stage with our DJ on top of it. I tried to design stages and things outside of the norm. I did not want to have a typical wedding with the bride and groom on the stage, where we would get stuck taking pictures all night. So the best way to opt out that was removing the stage and replacing it for a large DJ booth that was 16 feet high. Lastly, the one mistake I made from our engagement party was not knowing how I wanted my hair and make up done. I allowed my artist at that time to paint my face however they wanted. This time I wanted a very natural look that still made me look like ME. I wanted to look elegant but still with glowing bride appearance.
How did you select your bridal lengha or wedding dress? Did you have a favorite color in mind?
With my skin tone finding a color that looked great was truly difficult. I ended up choosing a color that my designer stated "no one would ever pick this color." After our wedding was done, multiple people asked me how I even thought of this color. I honestly chose the color because I had a dress from a store that was that color. Every time I wear that dress, I get a compliment on how well it suits my skin tone. Based off that, I picked my wedding dress color. I know that is bizarre but it worked out.
What was the most enjoyable part of the planning process, and why?
The most enjoyable part of the planning process was the multiple dinners we would have at my house to plan our events. I think the time I got to spend with my parents and friends while planning are some of the best memories I have. It is those memories that we still talk about.
What did your guests particularly love about your Wedding?
Our guests loved two things the most. One being our decor because it stood out and was very different from what they had ever seen. Secondly, they loved our engagement highlight video which we shot in Iceland with our amazing photographer/videographer Mir Anwar.
Was there a really special moment in your wedding that constantly replays in your mind?
Yes, the day of our nikkah Anil came to pick me up from house. When I walked out my house and up to him, he was in tears. I had never thought my husband would be the one to tear up and be that excited to marry me. That walk up to him and his voice trembling still gives me up goosebumps.
Do you have any words of wisdom for Brides-To-Be?
1. Take a moment every day of your wedding to step back and take in your surroundings. This time is such a joyous one, that you forget to take it all in.
2. Do not be picky about every little detail. I told my vendors what I wanted and took a step back. I realized that me being laid back and trusting them with their work was the best thing I could have done. Our vendors loved us, and we had a great relationship with them which had them going above and beyond for us.
3. Appreciate your friends and family as much during the wedding because it wouldn't be as great without any of them.
Anything else you want to tell us? We'd love to hear all about your other details! (jewelry, mehndi, venue, cake, bouquets, etc.)
One thing we also did that was out of the norm was we decided to not keep cake. We realized, we barely eat the cake at any wedding so we opted for an ice cream bar instead! It was a great concept and people loved it since it was a summer wedding.
See you tomorrow, ladies!
