How did you meet your Groom and when did you know he was "the one"?
Mike and I met during medical school orientation and became inseparable pretty quickly. In the summer of 2011, we joined a group of our medical school colleagues on a trip to Tanzania. We worked in a clinic in Mwanza, went on safari in the Serengeti, climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro and enjoyed the beaches of Zanzibar. It was during that trip that I realized that I could not live without him. He was/is my best friend and the most amazing person that I have ever met in my life.
How did you select your bridal lengha or wedding dress? Did you have a favorite color in mind?
I went to India with my mom to do all of my wedding shopping (with the help of my family in India). For my Anand Karaj, I always knew I wanted to look like a traditional Sikh/Punjabi bride. Since our wedding was in the winter, I loved the idea of maroon/burgundy lengha in velvet material with a light pink contrast dupatta. My lengha was custom made and exactly the way I had imagined it.
What was the most enjoyable part of the planning process, and why?
The time I got to spend with my family (in the US and India). My cousins, parents, and siblings were all very helpful and its the memories of sitting in the living room, late night, working on the numerous 'projects' with my mom, dad, and sister that I will cherish forever.
What did your guests particularly love about your Wedding?
I think everyone really loved the fusion of our cultures and being a part of all of the different events. As a couple, we had many hurdles to cross over the prior 8 years together (different religions, cultures, etc) and everyone was really excited that the wedding weekend was here at last - the dancing never stopped and the energy was high all weekend. Guests also have commented on how much they loved a lot of the details such as the personal notes I wrote on the back of every place card at the reception and the paper airplanes handmade from ski maps for escort cards.
Was there a really special moment in your wedding that constantly replays in your mind?
For our American ceremony, Mike and I wrote our own vows. I will never forget the way Mike looked at me as I read him my vows. I remember looking around the room in that moment and feeling so grateful to have all of the people that we love there to support us. I still get chills thinking about it.
For events other than your ceremony, please tell us as much as you would like about the decor, style, dances, and all the special details.
Jaggo/Mehendi Party - at my parents' house in a clear top tent with string lights - the decor was pink and orange; we had a Mehendi artist, dhol, a bindi/bangle bar for the guests. The DJ kept the dance floor packed all night and the food was amazing!
Sangeet/Rehearsal Dinner - we had this event at the great room at top of the hill in chapel hill. The colors/decor was peacock inspired so lots of blues and purple. Our family/friends performed Bollywood dances, we had a bhangra team perform and teach the guests some basic bhangra moves, there were amazing speeches from our friends and for food, we went with southern comfort food. It was the perfect fusion.
Don't go anywhere, every day more weds!
