New York City, New York Indian Wedding by Namita Azad Photography

Today we explore Dharti & Ilesh's spring love story, these sweet lovebirds joined their lives among light pastel colors and blooming flowers of New York City. Maharani Dharti unfolded her own beauty on her wedding day with her mehndi-clad hands by Henna For All NY looked and she radiated like a flower with the assistance of the beauty pro Arfana Jasar that applied her best techniques to create a beautiful natural and bright look for the ceremony. Following the same sweet color patterns groom Ilesh wore a super soft pink pale sherwani that blended beautifully with his hot pink turban. Their holy union took place indoors at the Clinton Manor where tons of flirty florals decorated the ceremony mandap stage creating a magical and picture-perfect place to exchange the couple’s vows, all this idyllic setting was arranged by Exclusive Events NY’s genius team. I’m still in awe for all the romantic deets and most notable photos of the ceremony meticulously captured by Namita Azad Photography. Go to the full gallery for more pictures!

How did you meet your Raja and when did you know he was "the one"?
I met Ilesh during the infamous MySpace days. From the profile picture he looked like a family friend, so I didn’t bother exploring his page and just accepted his friend request. After some time I realized that I had added a complete stranger, who actually knew the person I thought he looked like. Creepy! Fast forward a few months we bump into each other at a temple convention, exchanged numbers and here we are. Something told me he was the one from the very beginning, but it was confirmed when I saw how well he meshed with my family.
Do you have a super romantic proposal story or engagement memory?
Yes! Today is actually our 3yr engagement anniversary (10/25/14)! My really close friend/brother Chirag shared that he was seeing someone and was finally ready to introduce her to me. We were ALL patiently waiting for this day to come, so I didn’t doubt him at all. He mentioned that she was going to fly into town in a few weeks and wanted to explore Central Park, so we planned the day out accordingly. Turned out October 25th was the day she was available, and that happened to be the Hindu New Year that year. As you can imagine it was really hectic to get away from all the relatives at home and make it to NYC on time. Anyway, somehow I managed to get to the city (~30mins late) in my basic outfit (plain top + tights). I see Chirag but his mystery woman was nowhere in sight. When I asked he said she went to see the Bethesda Fountain with a friend and that we had to meet her there. As we approached the steps leading to the fountain I saw a crowd gathered at the bottom, and assumed a flash mob was going to take place. When we got to the bottom the group turned around with banners reading “Hi Dharti, Will you marry me?”! I was SO surprised that I didn’t even think it was real! I walked closer to see the banners and realized the people holding them up were no other than my siblings and best friends! When I turned around there was Ilesh down on one knee. I said YES!
Tell us about your wedding style. When you sat down to really figure out how your dream wedding would look, did you start with one central color, a palette of colors, or a theme that served as your inspiration?
Ilesh and I wanted a regal, but very clean look for our big day. Growing up I always dreamt of wearing a lavish deep red velvet lengha with kundan and polka jewelry on my wedding day; however, when the big day was in the planning I figured it would make the most sense to wear something like that for a fall or winter wedding. Our wedding date was finalized for April 16th, 2017, which also is my birthday! Spring is full bloom around this time, so Ilesh and I went with soft colors like white, beige, and pastel colors. I was nervous about how this different look would be perceived, but I was SO happy with the way it all looked. Arfana made me feel like a Queen!
What did you enjoy most about the process of planning your dream Indian wedding?
Wedding planning was really hectic because it really hard to pinpoint which vendors and products we loved most. Sounds like a very first world problem, but they’re tough decisions. The best part of planning was understanding how much of similar Ilesh and I are in terms of taste and interested. We really never conflicted over any decision; we both always narrowed down to the same choices. Aside from this shopping was hands down the BEST part of it all! Thank you, generous parents! <3
How did you choose your lengha or lenghas? Did you work with a certain designer?
Since I had dreamt of a red lengha, I actually ended up buying three different red ones very early on, but during my India shopping trip, my mom came across this beautiful white lengha with pink floral embroidery. It was perfect for our spring wedding-- I received so many compliments on my wedding day! For my reception, I wore a Sabyasachi outfit with zardozi work.
Looking back, was there a really special moment that you remember from your wedding that stands out as the most magical?
The most magical moment for me was when Ilesh put that mangalsutra and sindoor on me. That’s when it got real for me...I had goosebumps and a complete feeling in my heart.
Did you and your Raja have a special song that you danced to as your first dance? How did you choose it?
Our first dance was to the song “Tum Hi Ho” from Ashiqui 2. I think our feelings are perfectly manifested in those lyrics.
How about hair and makeup? Did you already have a style in mind or did you work with a specialist to find your perfect look?
This is where Arfana worked her charm! I wanted a simple, natural makeup look and an updo for the wedding, but wasn’t sure for the reception. With Arfana’s suggestion, I went with a braided updo for the evening and it was stunning!
Did family or friends help out with certain special details that really added to the event?
Our bridal party and parents were so helpful throughout the whole process. We didn’t even need a planner. I don’t think we would’ve been able to enjoy our big day without them.
Anything else you want to tell us? We'd love to hear all about your other details! (jewelry, mehndi, venue, cake, bouquets, etc.)
Every bride fears of something going wrong on her wedding day, but I am so thankful that I am not one of them. I was blessed to be able to work with great vendors such as Arfana and HennaForAllNY, Exclusive Events, Namita Azad Photography, Nathaniel Brady Videography, DJ Sunny P, and Chocal8kiss. Their combined services have provided Ilesh and me with memories that will last us a lifetime. Thank you!

Lincolnshire, IL Indian Fusion Wedding by Silver Moon Photography by Tiffany

What makes a wedding special? Unforgettable details! This couple’s reception was indeed special. The rays of the sun slipped through the windows of the Grand Marquee Pavilion at the Chicago Marriott Lincolnshire Resort and the entire décor presented shades of purple, also, an “in loving memory" table honored their loved ones in such a special day. Lovin Oven Cakery really nailed it, creating a purple five-tier Indian-inspire wedding cake crowned by a cute couple of elephants! For their reception night the now Mr. and Mrs. cleverly swapped their outfits, Devang wore a navy suit and Laura wore a traditional dazzling lehenga! Excellent start for a fusion marriage! By the time the sun went down all guests enjoyed a fantastic dinner catered by India House, and after an awesome feast everyone went out to the dance floor and DJ Prashant created a killer reception playlist that made everyone had the time of their lives! It must have been so much fun! Laura and Devang’s wedding memories are preserved forever thanks to Silver Moon Photography by Tiffany. See for yourself all the incredible deets of this lovely fusion wedding by going to the full gallery!

How did you meet your Groom and when did you know he was "the one"?
Devang and I met at work! Devang works for Jetblue Airlines at O'hare and I worked for Virgin America at the time. Their ticket counters are right next to each other and over the course of two years, we got to know each other better. Very slowly at first but eventually we were using our airline benefits and flying all over the country together. I knew Devang was the one when we went on one of our first dates, which was a trip to Disney World. I'm an uneasy flyer and he made me feel so at ease on the flight and the time passed by so quickly! During that trip was when he told me he loved me while we were sitting on a bench in Epcot. I still get butterflies in my stomach just thinking about it! The feelings were mutual.

Share the scoop on your Proposal Story!
We went to visit his parent's in Florida and then went with both of his parent's on a trip to Jamaica. From the moment we got to the resort in Jamaica, Devang was acting a little nervous. The second day of our trip he asked if I wanted to walk with him to watch the sunset (he gave it away a big- he's not the type of guy to ever ask to watch the sunset!). We went down to the beach, just the two of us, and he got on one knee and proposed. We were both a little nervous and overwhelmed so I know there were very nice words exchanged but honestly, the whole proposal was a happy blur!

Tell us how you went about planning your wedding, and your overall experience with the Venues, Hair & Makeup, Outfits, Decor Theme, and all of the other important details.
Our planning was unique! We were combining two cultures and wanted to make sure they were both equally represented. We didn't have a wedding planner so we really utilized our family in our wedding planning and they were all so helpful along the way. We were adamant that we did not want to have two separate celebrations and that we wanted our wedding to have the fusion feel through and through. This meant that we powered through two ceremonies at once (Hindu- Gujarati and Christian) and we had two officiants. My Dad built our Mandap and Devang wore traditional Indian clothes while I wore a white dress and we switched for the reception when he wore a suit and I wore a lehenga. It was an amazing wedding planning experience because both of our families really got to learn about each other's customs, religion and traditions. As for the decor theme, I envisioned jewel tones (with an emphasis on purple) and gold. My family loves Disney and I kept the bazaar feel of Morocco in Epcot in mind and we felt it turned out great! We had so much fun planning all of the different events and combining our families and cultures!

How did you select your bridal lengha or wedding dress? Did you have a favorite color in mind?
I chose a wedding dress for the ceremony and a lehenga for the reception. I wanted the ceremony dress to be white, as that is what I've been envisioning my whole life but I also wanted it to fit in with the fusion theme. I went with a dress made by Casablanca, which I purchased at Bijou Bridal. The dress had beautiful beadwork and was very sparkly yet tasteful, which fit in with our fusion theme. As for my lehnga... I thought I wanted purple and we spent months trying to find the perfect purple lehnga. Instead, I wound up with colors I had never envisioned! We purchased a beautiful orange, navy and light blue lehenga with silver and gold accents.

What was the most enjoyable part of the planning process, and why?
We loved learning about each other's traditions and combining our two cultures. It wasn't always easy but the pay off was so great and we really learned more about each other and our families through the process.

What did your guests particularly love about your Wedding?
Devang and I received A LOT of great feedback about our Mandap (which was awesome to hear since my Dad built it!), our food and our DJ. Music was really important to us so we were really happy that everyone loved the DJ so much and who doesn't love amazing Indian food?!

Was there a really special moment in your wedding that constantly replays in your mind?
Oh wow... the whole weekend?! Honestly, every moment of the wedding was pretty amazing and we were so lucky to feel so much love from all of family and friends. Everyone really got into the wedding spirit and had such a great time participating in all of the events (the pithi, the mehndi, sangeet, raas Garba, Baraat- all of it!) The most special moment that I replay often was walking down the aisle and seeing nothing but Devang and exchanging our vows. The first dance and father daughter dance and mother son dance were great too. Those moments were golden!

For events other than your ceremony, please tell us as much as you would like about the decor, style, dances, and all the special details.
We held the mehndi party at my sister's house and we kept it pretty small. There were probably about thirty of us there and we decorated with scarves and very pretty Indian style umbrellas. It was a laid back event and really did the trick of getting us into wedding celebration mode. We had a "Blessing Ceremony" at Compass Church out in Naperville, IL, which was special to me and my family as we wanted the opportunity to pray in the church and to bless the upcoming marriage. The sangeet was held at Pearl Banquets in Roselle, Illinois and Devang's family took care of decor and the timeline. His family performed several dances (they were awesome!) and my mom played two really touching songs on the piano while one of her friends sang- the song choices meant so much to me and it was beautiful! We also did the pithi at the end of the sangeet. We heard our guests loved learning the raas Garba dance but we missed it since we were trying to get all of the yellow off!

Do you have any words of wisdom for Brides-To-Be?
This only happens once- enjoy every moment no matter how trivial or how large. Take a deep breathe and trust that everything will get done on time. Be open to help from those you love and be open to new ideas (I know that isn't always easy!). When searching for vendors we realized it was best to go with our gut (and stay in our budget). We loved all our vendors! Devang's father and my grandmother had both passed away the January before our wedding, which made our wedding and planning extra emotional but really brought us closer together as a little family. Brides-to-be, you can get through anything! At the end of the day what really matters is the love of your fiance and your friends and family. We are so grateful for everyone's love and support.

Anything else you want to tell us? We'd love to hear all about your other details! (jewelry, mehndi, venue, cake, bouquets, etc.)
Have fun with the planning and pinning on Pinterest but don't let the crazy ideas on Pinterest overwhelm you. Some of it is feasible and with anything, you have to be imaginative and realistic at the same time. Happy wedding planning!

Keep on smiling with more precious weddings, Maharanis!

Lincolnshire, IL Indian Fusion Wedding by Silver Moon Photography by Tiffany

Fusion weddings are always special but Laura and Devang really knew how to take a fusion wedding to the next level! Their fantastic Hindu-Christian wedding didn’t have two separate ceremonies but one with two officiants! How brilliant is that? The most important day in the couple’s life was registered by Silver Moon Photography by Tiffany in a beautiful series of images that gives us a glimpse of the bride and groom’s love story. The multi-day wedding festivities started with Laura’s mehndi followed by a Sangeet night at the Pearl Banquets & Conference Center where the couple hosted an event with lots of merriment from both sides of their families. The main location for their interfaith nuptials took place in the elegant spaces of the Chicago Marriott Lincolnshire Resort where Laura and Devang involved their closest relatives to participate in the creation of their dream day. Laura’s father built the mandap and her mother teamed up with The Flower Cart to design all the décor for the ceremony and reception adding a truly personal and meaningful touch to make the whole event unique. All elements of a Gujarati and Christian wedding were present as a symbol of the combination of both cultures. In addition, the bride picked a white dress for the ceremony while the groom opted for a traditional sherwani. I'm loving all the beautiful fusion details this couple comprised for their big day! Need to see more details? Check the full gallery by Silver Moon Photography by Tiffany!

Queens, New York Pakistani Wedding by Alifsa Studio

After 4 years of planning, finally the big day arrived for Kishmala and Irfan. I must say this gorgeous bride did enjoy her wedding preparation process! They started their wedding celebrations with a bright and colorful mehndi night. The fantastic Antuns by Minar was the gathering point for this special occasion where music and traditions blended for a night to remember. Our bride and groom's outfits worked perfectly well together. The bright pink lehenga of Maharani Kishmala gave her a touch of grace that combined with her unique choice of jewelry added more beauty to the whole bridal look! The explosion of colors theme was imprinted in the backdrop stage, adding a spirited ambiance to the entire décor. The bridesmaids and groomsmen also joined Kishmala and Irfan with spectacular vivid outfits! The music and fun made the night memorable, but words are not enough to describe all the elegance and magic of the day, that’s why we are so grateful with Alifsa Studio who created a magnificent photo album of this love story. More and more to come of this heavenly wedding! Don’t go anywhere.

Tell us how you went about planning your wedding, and your overall experience with the Venues, Hair & Makeup, Outfits, Decor Theme, and all of the other important details.

My mom and I have been planning my wedding for about 4 years now. Gathering all of the decorations and things we might need during the wedding. As the last 6 months apprached, that’s when we went into full on preparation mode. We made all of the baskets, mehendi plates, all the little decoration details but hand with the stuff we had been collecting over the years. The venue was Terrace on the Park in Queens, NY. Hair and makeup was done in the bridal suite by c. The decor was done by Stylish Events in Hicksville.

How did you select your bridal lengha or wedding dress? Did you have a favorite color in mind?
I really wanted to get a nice mix in my bridal dress of American and desi. That is why I went with red and white. I didn’t have a certain shade of red in mind but as soon as I put that dress on, I loved the color and the mirrors all over the whole dress. It was unlike any other I had seen.

What was the most enjoyable part of the planning process, and why?
The most enjoyable part I would say was the last few days approaching the wedding. Their were so many people in my house all the time. Someone was decorating the house, and others hanging my jehez clothes up. My sister and I were making decorative boxes to display my sandals and clutches. It was all such a memorable experience.

What did your guests particularly love about your Wedding?
I think just the overall feel of it. I had so many events leading up to my wedding. I had 3 dholkis, 2 bridal showers, mehendi, shaadi and last was valima. My wedding felt like it lasted a long time which I think people really enjoyed.

Was there a really special moment in your wedding that constantly replays in your mind?
The moment that replays in my mind is my entrance. When I was carried into the hall in an open doli, with the song “kaun Tujhe” playing in the background. It felt magical.

For events other than your ceremony, please tell us as much as you would like about the decor, style, dances, and all the special details.
All the events before my wedding like the dholkis and bridal showers, those were all planned and decorated by my mom and I. For the main dholki I had at my house, I had my friends practice a dance routine with me months in advance.

Do you have any words of wisdom for Brides-To-Be?
I feel like as a bride, you take too much pressure and tension on everything being perfect. You get so caught up in the fact that everything goes as you planned that you forget to enjoy your own wedding. The day of my wedding passed so quickly. When it was time for ruksati I was so confused thinking “wait, it’s over?” The whole wedding passed in just getting a photoshoot while everyone else had dinner. My advice would be to just take a chill pill and savor every moment of your wedding day because it won’t come again. So just enjoy it!
