Burbank, CA Indian Wedding by Sameer Soorma Studios

Aksha and Raj's whimsical Indian wedding has come to an end! But don't worry Maharanis, the memories have been forever immortalized by Sameer Soorma Studios for us to enjoy at our leisure! For her reception party, Aksha slipped into a beautifully crafted, sleek silhouette lengha with intricate patchwork that added a feminine flair designed by India Sari Palace. The groom ensured he was on point just as much as the bride throughout the events donning designer pieces from ManyavarSurabhi Event Decor filled the venue with towering blooms, ivory linens, and shimmering drapery. The sweetheart stage was lit up in illuminated lighting that added a level of icy pizazz throughout the venue. Music is a powerful memory trigger and DJ Tanveer ensured the crowd created memorable moments on the dance floor. I relive all the memories in our enchanting gallery

How did you meet your Groom and when did you know he was "the one"?
Raj and I were Facebook friends before we met. We also had mutual friends. When I asked raj how he found me he said it was through a common friend. We would randomly chat here and there, until one of the days I happened to say, "I feel so tired, I couldn't sleep all night." Raj happened to say, "why didn't you call me. I said, "I didn't have your number". He gave me his number. I was a bit coy and reserved. I gave him my number too and we texted until he asked permission to call me on one of the days. I thought to myself what a gentleman and within that conversation he randomly said will you marry me? and I said what?! and then he replied oh nothing. We continued to talk, having no intention of getting into a relationship, but Raj seemed more determined than I was. As each day passed we spent more time talking to each other. One of the nights he called and decided to say I love you over the phone. I just said okay, I wasn't really sure if he was even in his senses. So I decided to ask him the next day if he remembers what he said. And he said, "Of course I do, I said, I love you."  After 4 months of talking nonstop Raj decided to give me a surprise and meet me at the Disney Store. He planned this surprise with my sister Raina. I had no idea what was happening all I remember is that I walked into the Disney Store and I thought I saw Raj passing by and of course I was taken away by surprise, instead of running towards him I ended up walking out of the store and Raina pushed me back into the store. I knew he was the one when he surprised me for the second time at my 21st birthday in Vegas where he met my entire family.

Share the scoop on your Proposal Story!
My proposal was also another beautiful surprise organized by Raj in Pismo. It was not just a fun day, but a fun weekend with friends. Thanks to all our friends that helped out as well and kept the secret along with our parents. I just thought we were going living in the dunes at Pismo beach. The next day after breakfast Raj told me he had to go meet his friends and told me to get ready because we will be doing a photo shoot at the beach. I put on a dress and started getting ready. My best friend showed up at the door blindfolded me and took me to Margo Dodd Park. I got out of the car without a clue they took off the blindfold and there he was waiting for me at the end of the cliff with the ocean waves crashing against the rocks down below. And of course, that's when I knew it was truly happening! I was getting proposed to after 6 years of being together.

Tell us how you went about planning your wedding, and your overall experience with the Venues, Hair & Makeup, Outfits, Decor Theme, and all of the other important details.
Venues were the first thing we booked, followed by makeup and hair artists. Then came the decor theme, cards, and outfits.
Reception venue: Hyatt Valencia as a venue was already an extremely beautiful venue and their staff is just as amazing. Cristina and Katie both went above and beyond including the rest of the staff to make our Reception day perfect. Not only did they take care of our needs during the days of the event, but even after the event.
Wedding Venue: Castaway as a venue was also an amazing venue with beautiful views. The day of coordinator Christina and her manager were amazing. They fixed all the last minute glitches that came up on the day of the wedding.

Makeup- My makeup was done by Shabnam Hossine. She is a sweetheart with an amazing personality. She did my mom's makeup during my engagement back in 2016. I felt extremely comfortable with her and I feel like that's really important for brides to have that kind of relationship with her vendors so that they don't shy away from their vendors if they don't like something in particular. She did my makeup and also my mom's makeup for all four days.

Hair- Farah was by Farah Shaikh. I also knew her from the time of my engagement. She is so sweet and a gem of a person. I can't begin to tell you how talented she is. She did my hair and makeup for all four days along with moms. She also did my bridesmaids hair on the day of the wedding.

Bridal Outfit: Sham Mall & Frontier Heritage. I traveled all the way to India to find a beautiful outfit and since I couldn't really find the perfect outfit I created it with the help of Frontier Heritage Artesia by customizing a 15ft transparent veil with the vision of my bridesmaids holding my veil behind me as I walk down the aisle.
Reception Outfit: Saree Palace Artesia Heeral was so warm and welcoming. I described what I was looking for and in a couple of minutes she had already picked out two lehengas she knew I would fall in love with. I picked the peach cold shoulder lehenga from them. The thing I love about them is that they sell 1 item per piece.

My wedding decor was inspired by pastel colors. Since my husband knows I truly love pastel colors with forest green which was the color for my bridesmaids.

How did you select your bridal lengha or wedding dress? Did you have a favorite color in mind?
I honestly did not want to wear red because it was such a common bridal color, but as I was selecting my bridal clothes I saw other brides choosing different colors and came to realize that red was timeless. It will always be the color of the traditional Indian bride and I didn't want to have any regrets. I bought my outfit from sham mall in Chandigarh, but had it customized. I had the vision to get a custom veil placed on top of my original veil including a side dupatta which was designed by Neetu ji at Frontier Heritage. I was so impressed with how they designed the rest of my bridal outfit.

What was the most enjoyable part of the planning process, and why?
Deciding my home decor and taking a wedding trip to India with my massi's. I spent a lot of time with my mom, dad, grandparents, aunts, and uncles. It truly brings the family together no matter how many miles apart we are.

What did your guests particularly love about your Wedding?
The food which was catered by Royal Tandoor. And the decor by Surabhi event decor.
And last, but not least the dance floor and custom Bitmojis by music mantra.

Was there a really special moment at your wedding that constantly replays in your mind?
Yes, the time when I walked the aisle and when Raj lifted my veil.

For events other than your ceremony, please tell us as much as you would like about the decor, style, dances, and all the special details.
For my mehendi and haldi events. I had envisioned pom style hanging decor and my mom decided to hand make those and bring my vision to life. It turned out amazing and I can't remember how many compliments we got for our home decor.

Do you have any words of wisdom for Brides-To-Be?
Stay calm! I know it can be really hard especially since it's your big day. Also, if you want to work on details it's never too early. I started planning my wedding a year early and I still feel like that wasn't enough time.

Anything else you want to tell us? We'd love to hear all about your other details! (jewelry, mehndi, venue, cake, bouquets, etc.)
The decor: SurabhiEventDecor - Suma took the time out to create this beautiful pastel floral mandap along with a matching sankedha that was designed by my mom and me with periwinkle blue and blush satin tablecloths to tie in the theme.
My jewelry was all the way from India- Manimuktaa jewelers
Mehendi- In 2016 I had already decided that divyhenna by prashanta was going to be my henna artist and I had kept a special design from 2016 inspired by bridalmehendiqueen from India. I ended up showing that design to prashanta and she added her personal touch to the design as well.
A piece of Cake by Pavani- We had a small cake and cupcakes. The cupcakes were made with real fruit-strawberry, pineapple, chocolate and red velvet with edible toppers.

The love doesn't end just yet!

Share the scoop on your Proposal Story!
What was supposed to be a “day on the beach” turned into a proposal of a lifetime! It was a beautiful and sunny day in Clearwater Beach as Shashank and I were planning on celebrating his birthday with a nice dinner on the shore. As we walked along the sand during sunset, I thought to myself how romantic of a moment this was. When I glanced out into the distance I saw what looked like an Indian wedding taking place, with bright drapes flowing in the breeze. I turned to Shashank and said, “Wow that looks so beautiful, someone is getting married!” As we got closer, I noticed three large photos of a couple and soon realized that the couple was US! I immediately turned to Shashank and saw the look in his eyes. At that moment I knew this was no longer his birthday celebration. He took my hands and proceeded with the most beautiful speech, which pinnacled with “Richa, will you marry me?” This was the best day of my life!

Tell us how you went about planning your wedding, and your overall experience with the Venues, Hair & Makeup, Outfits, Decor Theme, and all of the other important details.
Planning: Over the next year, we started planning our fairytale wedding. We were incredibly fortunate to have our families and a great group of friends to help coordinate and organize all events. They helped with planning all the details for each event and made sure that the execution exceeded our expectations.

Wedding:
Our theme was royalty and regal embodying an Indian King and Queen. Shashank and I both wore custom royal designer clothing and designer kundan stone jewelry.

Our mandap was the largest Occasions by Shangri-La has ever created, at 40 feet wide with a 12-foot center golden medallion. Mandap had ornate carvings and cutwork and an abundance of fresh flowers. We had a raised cat-walk aisle.

We color coordinated between both sides. Richa’s bridesmaids wore pink and gold sarees. Shashank’s groomsmen wore matching pink and gold kurta pyjama with gold safaaShashank's female cousins wore green Anarkali dresses. The guests were given pink safaas (turbans). And all the guests had red sunglasses with “Shashank & Richa 2017” written on them.

Baarat:
Shashank had a traditional Indian style baraat with over 300 guests in attendance. There was a surprise “dance-off” performed by Richa’s bridesmaids and Shashank’s cousins which was led by Shashank.

Shashank was escorted by his parents and brother to the horse & carriage to start the baraat. His groomsmen and cousins lined up on both sides creating a very special aisle and welcoming.

Groomsmen and cousins were given gold safaas to wear. Additionally, all the guests were given pink safaa to wear and have as a memento of the event.

Shashank, his parents, and his brother walked down a red carpet aisle lined with his groomsmen and cousins and Richa’s bridesmaids who showered him with rose petals. We had a raised stage outside on the Fountain Plaza for the Milni ceremony.

Richa walked under a decorative red cloth which was held up by her bridesmaids to greet Shashank and place the haar on him.

Vidhai: We made our departure as newlyweds in a Vintage 1962 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud Convertible.

Reception:
Décor: Starry night with a full LED-backdrop which changed colors throughout the night to set the mood. Hanging crystal chandeliers. Centerpieces: Several styles of large crystal vases with Fresh floral arrangements consisting of Magenta orchids, Purple, Plum, and Blue fresh floral and floral blossoms. We included a set of 2 48-seat elevated estate tables so that all the guests could have the same experience.

Reception Entertainment included Stilt walkers, statue people, and chair balancing act, dances by cousins and by bridesmaids

Newlywed reception entrance: This was quite the surprise grand entrance. Guests had been facing the doors as that was the way the wedding party entered so they were expecting to see us also enter from the double doors. Suddenly the 12-foot golden medallion started turning on the stage when our entrance music began and all heads turned as we were standing behind it and made our rotating grand entrance on the golden medallion! So memorable and really a WOW factor. Many guests recalled the entrance as “James Bond-esque

First dance: Tere Sang Yara and Cheez Badi (cheez badi was a surprise remix we added at the end of our first dance to get the guests excited)

Father/Daughter Dance: What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong (backstory behind the song is this was one of the first stage performances I had made as a child in school and I will always remember my dad being there by my side before I got on stage to calm my nerves, cheering me on in the front row as I performed, and the first to hug me after the performance. Since that day it became our father-daughter song and at my wedding reception, I got to dance to that song with him!

Mother/Son Dance: “Meri Maa” from Yaariyan. This song characterizes the bond between Shashank and his mother. Detailing the sacrifices she had made to see her son happy as he grew into the gentleman he is on his wedding day.

How did you select your bridal lengha or wedding dress? Did you have a favorite color in mind?
Bride's Jewelry:

Pithi- fresh roses, flowers, and berries
Sangeet: all diamond gemstone jewelry
Wedding: all real kundan jewelry
Reception: custom-made Swarovski crystal tiara

What did your guests particularly love about your Wedding?
All the “WOW” Moments our guests still talk about to this day:

1. Newlywed surprise rotating grand entrance on the 12-foot golden medallion at the reception
2. Baraat battle dance between Richa’s bridesmaids and Shashank’s cousins
3. Entertainment: stilt walkers and balancing chair act, interactive live singers at the Sangeet
4. Vidhai: Our departure as newlyweds in a Vintage 1962 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud Convertible.

Was there a really special moment in your wedding that constantly replays in your mind?
This was truly a magical fairytale wedding of our dreams. We are so lucky and grateful that everything went flawlessly and exceeded our vision. To have celebrated with everyone we love meant the world to us. Our family and friends have told us our wedding is one never to be forgotten! We couldn’t agree more!

For events other than your ceremony, please tell us as much as you would like about the decor, style, dances, and all the special details.
Events: Pithi/Mendhi: Traditional décor colors: yellow, orange. Submerged rose centerpieces. A live band provided music. Shashank and my pithi were performed side by side on the same stage so both families were able to come together and enjoy.

Grah Shanti: Mustard Yellow and Teal. Live band/music. Both families coordinated outfit colors (white, red and gold)

Sangeet: Festive and colorful Indian Musical and Dance party. Included not only a live band but also world-class singers. Shashank and Richa sat on a Rajasthani style swing in front of a colorful Ribbon wall with hanging mela décor. There were traditional Indian khatla (bench) which guests sat on. There was a wide variety of food including Chinese, American, Mexican, Indian and more. The food was beautifully displayed under colorful canopies. The event had a combination of garba, sangeet, live dance performances by parents, friends, family, and Richa. We had a colorful and life-size dhol cake which actually made dhol sounds when hitting the sides.

Anything else you want to tell us? We'd love to hear all about your other details! (jewelry, mehndi, venue, cake, bouquets, etc.)
We created a personalized “SR” emblem that was located on all of our wedding materials: welcome baskets, return gifts, fruit carving during the cocktail reception.
We placed large 5-foot portraits of ourselves in various places of the hotel to direct guests to each event. All of our guests stayed at the Hilton Orlando Resort giving them a full wedding getaway weekend. The hotel had placed several life-size portraits of Shashank and Richa, along with personalized signage throughout the hotel. Guests also had access to  24-hour hospitality suites to get together and have a great time throughout the whole weekend.

Food played a large role in our wedding planning. We wanted to ensure our guests had a variety of cuisines to choose from throughout the 4-day event. This included: Gujarati, Punjabi, Thai, Italian, Mexican, South Indian, and Chinese. We also had live food stations where our guests could customize their food. We had an assortment of desserts along with a life-size dhol cake at the sangeet and a 7-tier wedding cake with 6 different flavors, during the reception.

As I told Shawna (who has been so amazing and helpful getting our video posted and now all our photos and story) we only want the vendors who truly went above and beyond for us to be showcased.

See you on Monday with more wedding bliss!

From single to soulmate. From the first date to forever. Maharani Joyita's love for her beau Sammeer is seemingly timeless. And, as apparent in this fabulous soiree orchestrated by Occasions Wedding & Event Planning, you can certainly see why! Joyita's wish of a sophisticated designed venue with natural lighting and her closest family and friends came true at the Hyatt Regency Lake Washington. True love comes naturally and we are cherishing all this lovely décor by Flora Nova Design. The crowd cheered on the dancefloor after the couple cut a Crème de la Crème confectionary masterpiece.
